MACLAS offers a range of prizes & awards for excellence in scholarship and service.  For submissions, deadlines & contact information please use the link for the current conference year.


Władysław Maryan Froelich Research Grant

Up to two $500 prizes awarded annually to faculty, professionals or independent scholars to carry out research or creative projects on any facet of Latin American culture, politics, and society. The typical submission deadline is in January before the MACLAS conference.


Juan Espadas Prize

For best paper submitted to the MACLAS conference by an undergraduate student. Submissions consist of a final, polished version of the paper presented at the conference, and should include the appropriate citation styles for that discipline (MLA, APA, Chicago). The typical submission deadline is in September after the MACLAS conference in the spring.


John D. Martz III Prize

For best paper submitted to the MACLAS conference by a graduate student. Submissions consist of a final, polished version of the paper presented at the conference, and should include the appropriate citation styles for that discipline (MLA, APA, Chicago). The typical submission deadline is in September after the MACLAS conference in the spring. 


Harold Eugene Davis Prize

Awarded each year for best book chapter or article published in the previous two years by a MACLAS member in good standing for the past two years. The typical submission deadline is in January before the MACLAS conference.


Arthur P. Whitaker Prize

Awarded each year for the best book published in the previous two years by a MACLAS member in good standing for the past two years. The typical submission deadline is in January before the MACLAS conference.



Christina Turner Graduate Student Travel Award

Awarded to graduate students to help attend the MACLAS conference. The typical submission deadline is in January before the conference.


Judy McInnis Distinguished Service Award

For dedicated service to MACLAS. Current MACLAS members are eligible and encouraged to nominate anyone for this award. Letters of nomination are typically due in January before the MACLAS conference.

 

The James Street Prize

This prize is awarded to the best peer-reviewed article published in MARLAS (Mid Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies) in the past two years. The MARLAS Editorial Board will nominate the top five articles to be considered by the MACLAS committee for this prize.

NOTE: If the author(s) is/are running for the Street Prize, they will not be considered for the Davis Prize.
