2020 Prizes and Awards
Arthur P. Whitaker Prize: The Arthur P. Whitaker Prize is awarded to the author of the best book published in the past year.
Winner: Dr. John Stolle-McAllister for Intercultural Interventions: Politics, Community, and Environment in the Otavalo Valley. Cambria Press, 2019.
Davis Prize: The Davis Prize is awarded each year for best book chapter or article published in the previous two years by a member in good standing for the past two years.
Winners: Drs. Luis Roniger & Leonardo Senkman for “Conspirationism, Synarchism and the Long Shadow of Perón in Argentina, Journal of Modern Jewish Studies, 17:4, 434-454 (2018).
Władysław Maryan Froelich Research Grant: The Władysław Maryan Froelich Research Grant enables recipients to access special research materials. There were no grants this year.
The Christina Turner Graduate Student Travel Award: This award helps graduate students attend the annual conference.
Winner: Mario S. Portugal-Ramirez, for article on Digital Health in Latin America.
The Juan Espadas Prize: The Juan Espadas Prize is given for the best paper submitted to the MACLAS 2020 conference by an undergraduate student. There were no submissions this year.
The John D. Martz III Prize: The John D. Martz III Prize is given for Best Graduate Student Paper. There were no submissions this year.
The Judy McInnis Distinguished Service Award: The Judy McInnis Distinguished Service Award is granted in recognition of dedicated service to MACLAS.
This year there were no nominations and therefore no recipients of the McInnis Award. To nominate someone, send a letter to committee chair (TBA in Fall newsletter) indicating the nominee and detailing the candidate’s service.
The James Street Prize 2020: This prize is awarded to the best peer-reviewed article published in MARLAS
Winner: “Escrutinio internacional y acompañamiento de las víctimas de Ayotzinapa: una lectura de los informes del GIEI” by Dr. Diego Rivera Hernandez.
